The Spark runs each day's research through a personal catalogue of invention ideas and the ethos behind them. Daedalus Labs, the hydrogel thermal management company my cofounder and I built, came out of that same catalogue and ethos. Six months in, it's already out in the field collecting real performance data. This isn't hypothetical.

How it works

Every morning it reads the new research, then screens it against a set of guardrails so nothing off-limits makes it through. What clears runs against the catalogue of ideas and the ethos behind them, which is where the concepts come from. Each promising one gets worked into a short roadmap you could actually act on.

Two of the concepts it has produced.

Disc Regeneration Scaffold

A hydrogel that manages spinal disc regeneration by directly targeting the protein pathway that keeps discs from healing themselves.

A microporous annealed particle hydrogel doped with UBE2Q2-mimetic peptides for intervertebral disc regeneration. The scaffold would recruit the protein degradation machinery that Paper 4 identifies as protective against disc degeneration, embedding it directly into an injectable, porous matrix that mirrors the nucleus pulposus environment. The MAP platform's tunable porosity could create microniches where nucleus pulposus cells maintain phenotype while the UBE2Q2 pathway actively clears senescent cells and misfolded proteins. This extends both the university lab's MAP work and the GBS nerve conduit approach, same principle of embedding biological function into scaffold architecture, new anatomical target. The disc doesn't heal itself because it's avascular and hypoxic; a hydrogel that actively manages protein homeostasis could change that equation.
Kilometer-Scale Living Climate Skins

What if every building's cooling system talked to its neighbors? This extends Daedalus's flagship hydrogel cooling product from a single panel to an entire city block.

Paper 4's 2.6km resolution climate modeling finally makes microclimate prediction actionable for building-scale interventions. The flagship cooling product currently optimizes for panel cooling, but what if hydrogel facades were networked across city blocks and coordinated using high-resolution atmospheric predictions? Each building's evaporative cooling would be tuned hourly based on incoming solar flux, humidity gradients, and wind patterns at neighborhood scale. This transforms it from single-panel optimization to emergent urban thermoregulation. The city breathes together.

A premium leather alternative grown from fungi: belts, wallets, bags, even car interiors. Designer goods, biofabricated instead of farmed or synthetic.

Biodegradable Medical Equipment

Silk and hydrogel medical components carrying healing-promoting compounds. Wound dressings and implants that do their job, then dissolve once they're done.

Doped Mycelium Electronics

Conductive circuit components grown from mushrooms rather than mined or synthesized. Already running as a home-lab experiment, not just a concept.
